How is the Word List compiled?

The Word List uses the following parts of speech:

• singular and plural nouns,
• articles,
• verbs (infinitives, past simple, present participles, past participles),
• adjectives,
• adverbs,
• pronouns.

The following may not be used:

• jargon, colloquialisms, slang;
• archaisms (except words that are in common use in contemporary speech and literature);
• proper nouns, acronyms, abbreviations;
• adjectives and nouns formed from proper nouns and names of cities.
